A good story makes for a good script, but great character work elevates the script to excellent. But writing compelling and real characters that audiences will relate to and follow throughout the course of your movie/show is no easy feat. People are complicated. So are characters. 

For this special two week clinic, Roadmap Writers welcomes alumna Mary Robbins (writer/clinical therapist). This class is limited to only eight writers, and each writer will walk away with a clear understanding of their characters wants, needs, fears, and avoidant behaviors.

Mary Robbins
Clinical Therapist/Screenwriter

Mary Elbert Robbins is an accomplished screenwriter and storyteller known for her character development skills. With a background in screenwriting and a deep understanding of psychology, Mary offers a unique perspective on storytelling.

Her achievements include two-time Second Rounder status at the Austin Film Festival for two original pilots, and her feature script "Meet Me in the Kitchen at Midnight" was optioned by Pollack Films. Mary's work has also been recognized in various screenwriting competitions, including being a finalist at the Vancouver International Women's Film Festival and a semi-finalist at the International TV Pilot Awards.

In addition to her creative endeavors, Mary has a compelling clinical background, having worked as a Clinical Therapist since 2000. She specializes in helping children, families, and individuals with mental health challenges, with experience at esteemed institutions such as Yale Child Study and the Department of Children and Families.

Mary holds an MFA in Screenwriting for TV and Film from Stephens College and has taught a course on character development at Stephens and Long Island University. Her passion for storytelling and her ability to blend her creative and clinical expertise make her an inspiring and compassionate instructor for aspiring screenwriters.
