Particularly Interested In
Action-comedies, mental health stories (specifically bipolar), and Big Short'esque drama/comedies about hyper specific historical events from 1960 to present day. I'm interested in meeting with all kinds of writers, but have a passion for mental health so any writers with that background would be welcomed too. However, that's not a prerequisite for me! Really just hoping to find some scripts I connect with. Aiming to find a sub 5 million script I can try and set up for me to direct.
I'm fairly genre agnostic -- theme matters a lot to me. What the story is actually about. Genre tends to be more window dressing and play accessories. For instance, right now I'm working on a music-comedy about 19th century literary figures, a sci-fi adventure about life on the moon, and a horror-satire about a snowy thanksgiving gone wrong! I spent three years developing and writing a movie about the college kid who invented the first computer worm and his dad who was the head of cyber security at the NSA. It was a hyper-specific and little known true story about the early internet in the 80s that we gave a sort of John Hughes meets The Big Short treatment too. I really loved that project and it'd be fun to find another real like story like that or even like Damon and Affleck's AIR to support and work on.

Specifically Not Interested In
Broad comedies. I write a lot of dark comedy, satire, and genre/action-comedy but I'm not particularly interested in broad comedies (unless there's perhaps a mental health angle.) I'm also not interested in movies with a budget north of 15 million, but my writing has largely been genre agnostic. I've written everything from family-friendly PG adventures to dark, rated-R horror thrillers. Not particularly interested in True Crime, but do love a good heist movie if there's a fresh take on a real-world heist I've not heard of.
More about
Ben Davis
Ben Davis is a writer/director born in Dallas who lives in Los Angeles, CA. Ben has Bipolar II and his work explores themes of mental health, family, and faith (whether spiritual or amorphous). He often uses satire in his stories and creates characters who struggle to feel at home in their heads or society. In 2022 and 2015 his feature screenplays PHOENIX TO KIEV (22) and CHASING SHADOWS (15) were Nicholl Fellowship semifinalists and he has directed commercials for Mcdonald's, Netflix, Metro by T-Mobile, Sega, and others. Ben often cries listening to John Williams soundtracks and writing this in the third person nearly killed him. Ben is currently working on a project (Writing and Directing) that is starring Josh Hutcherson and produced by The Gotham Group, Gidden Media and Josh Hutcherson's Turkeyfoot Productions. Ben is also currently developing a few projects with Oscar-winning Composer, Michael Giacchino.
