Weekend Box Office Top Ten: 

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE opened at #1 with $35.4M (Million) domestic, and a very early $56.4M worldwide, ahead of what is expected to be a lengthy and lucrative run, as December titles play well through January. It is already the top animated opening in December ever, and received an astounding A+ CinemaScore from audiences. The international release is also staggered, with China opening next weekend. At a budget of $90M plus marketing, this film will have no problem reaching profitability for Sony, with plans already announced for both a spinoff and sequel. 

THE MULE opened at #2 with $17.2M, a terrific number for this Clint Eastwood film which will have great holds in the coming weeks, especially as the older audience does not rush out over the first weekend. Produced for $50M plus marketing, this WB release should be able to reach profitability over its theatrical run.

DR. SEUSS' THE GRINCH held at #3 with $11.5M, an impressive domestic total of $239.2M, and $372.6M worldwide, meaning it will definitely break past the $400M threshold soon for Universal and Illumination. Produced for $75M plus marketing, this has become a nice holiday hit for the studio.

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET is #4 with $9.5M, a domestic total of $154.4M, and an early $285.1M global, as much more will be earned internationally over a slow expansion. Produced for $175M plus marketing, this is expected to be profitable for Disney.

MORTAL ENGINES opened disastrously at #5 with $7.5M domestic, and $42.3M globally, a terrible number for Universal given the production cost of $100M plus marketing. This one will be one of the most expensive misfires of the year, and cost the studio north of $100-120M in losses. 

CREED 2 slid to #6 with $5.3M, a domestic total of $104.8M, and an early $131.8M globally. Produced for $50M plus marketing, this will become profitable for MGM and New Line over the next couple of weeks.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY is #7 with $4.1M, a domestic total of $180.4M, and a huge worldwide total of $635.9M. Produced for $52M plus marketing, the awards-nominated biopic is tremendously profitable for Fox.

INSTANT FAMILY is #8 with $3.7M, a domestic total of $60.2M, and an early $68M worldwide with most of international yet to debut. Produced for $48M plus marketing, this film will need to match its domestic and international totals in order to be profitable for Paramount.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD fell to #9 with $3.6M, a domestic total of $151.6M, and $595.8M globally. Produced for $200M plus marketing costs, this film is essentially profitable for WB now, but at a much lower level than any other film in the Potter franchise.

GREEN BOOK is #10 with $2.7M, and a total of $24.6M. Produced for $23M plus marketing, the film will be a moderate financial loss for Universal.

Other Notable: AQUAMAN has now brought in an astounding $261M internationally, with only about half of all international territories represented, the U.S. debut next week, as well as further global expansion. There is no question this film will be profitable for WB now, with the only question being how high it ultimately goes. Most expect a finish north of $800M, with some believing the film could finish globally closer to the $900M-1 Billion mark.

As mentioned, this next week kicks the entire holiday film season into high gear, with AQUAMAN, BUMBLEBEE, MARY POPPINS RETURNS, and SECOND ACT all looking to earn big with their audiences, SPIDER-VERSE having a strong hold, as well as THE MULE in its second weekend, and the other family titles in the top ten all leading to what will be one of the biggest Decembers on record.
