Weekend Box Office Top Ten:

THE NUN opened at #1 with a huge $53.5M (Million) domestic take, and a global launch of $131M, to not only a franchise best for the CONJURING universe, but already making this $22M budgeted film massively profitable for WB after a single weekend. There is much more to be earned here, and once again the Conjuring brand proves to be intensely popular not just in the U.S., but across the world.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS held onto the #2 spot with $13.6M, a domestic total now of $136.2M, and $164.7M worldwide. Also from WB, this romantic comedy cost just $30M plus marketing, making it very profitable for the studio which has already announced plans for the second installment based on the trilogy of novels.

PEPPERMINT opened at #3 with a decent $13.2M result from STX. Produced for only $25M plus marketing, there is no doubt this will be profitable thanks to its reasonable budget and the international markets where this film is expected to perform well.

THE MEG slid to #4 with $6M, a domestic total of $131.5M, and an impressive $491.9M globally, set to swim past the $500M mark sometime this week. Produced for somewhere in the $150M range plus marketing, this film has become nicely profitable for WB as well, which as a studio has been on a winning streak through August and now into September.

SEARCHING is #5 with $4.5M, a domestic total of $14.1M, and a terrific $32M worldwide for this micro-budgeted film which was acquired by Sony for just $5M and had a modest marketing campaign. There is no doubt this will be nicely profitable for the studio.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT is #6 with $3.8M, a domestic total of $212.1M, and a huge global take of $726.6M. Produced for $178M plus marketing, this film is a solid hit for Paramount, and continues to show the strength of the M:I brand, which no doubt will see another installment.

DISNEY'S CHRISTOPHER ROBIN held at #7 with $3.1M, a domestic total now of $91.7M, and $142.9M worldwide, a good result for the studio.

OPERATION FINALE slipped to #8 with $3M and a total now of just $14.1M. Produced for $24M plus marketing by MGM, this film is unlikely to be profitable but could reach break-even range depending on how international performs.

ALPHA is #9 with $2.5M, a domestic total of only $32.4M, and just $59.9M worldwide. Produced for $50M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for Sony-backed Studio 8.

BLACKKKLANSMAN is #10 with $1.5M, a domestic total of $43.5M, and $65.5M worldwide. Produced for only $15M plus marketing costs, this film has become a solid hit for Focus Features, both profitable and part of the awards conversation.

Next weekend sees launches for Fox's THE PREDATOR sequel/reboot, Lionsgate thriller A SIMPLE FAVOR, Sony and Studio 8's WHITE BOY RICK, and faith-based UNBROKEN: PATH TO REDEMPTION, in what is shaping up to be a busy September at the box office.
