Interview with Tayanna Todd

What drew you to the entertainment industry?
It’s always been the stories for me. My love for the entertainment industry comes from my belief that nothing connects and unites us better than a good story. But what keeps me in the business is the desire to be part of telling GREAT stories…the ones that have the power to (re)shape the perspective that we have of others and of ourselves.

What's your favorite part about working with writers?
I️’m always learning new things about the world from writers…there’s nothing better than talking character & story with imaginative, thoughtful, talented, & passionate people! I️ love helping writers clarify and craft their vision & voice (usually through an unintentional game of 20 Questions.)

What gets you most excited about a writer's pitch?
I’m most intrigued when writers find a unique, clever, or personal way into a story and have a clear perspective/angle on their pitch. Nothing excites me more than when a writer is able to surprise me during their pitch - either by changing my assumptions or perceptions on something, having an unexpected twist in the plot, or by subverting my expectations of a character or world.

What's one bit of advice that helps you the most in this industry?
It’s storytelling, not curing cancer, so it should still be fun at it’s core! To that end, I remind myself to keep it all in perspective…everyone, at all levels, in every part of this business is just trying to figure it out (especially during an unprecedented global pandemic). And a bonus nugget, remember that not every “good opportunity” that comes your way will actually be a good fit or the right opportunity for you. Be discerning & be patient.

What's your favorite non-industry-related hobby or activity?
I️ love jigsaw puzzles - the more pieces the better! (And I’m the reigning household champ in Connect Four)
