Interview with Manager - Scott Schulman

What drew you to the entertainment industry?
Growing up in a small town in New Jersey, I did nothing but watch movies and television.  The hunger to be part of the entertainment universe grew when I was in high school.  My father would look for his camcorder and it was in my hands shooting content wherever I could.  I was part of every film/tv organization that my high school offered.  I remember applying to the biggest colleges, they loved my grades, but hated the directed movie that I submitted with it.  Went to school at Hofstra University and the hunger grew even more.  I was the kid who went to NYC every Saturday and watched every movie at the 42nd street AMC for the price of one ticket, watched every show that NYC offered, not knowing the entertainment industry would be my destiny.  Shortly after, I graduated and told my parents that I was moving to LA to work in the entertainment industry – that was 15 years ago.

What's your favorite part about working with writers?
What a great question, but for me there isn’t one favorite part.  When I found out that literary management was going to be my life forever, it was the most amazing feeling and it was writers that helped me find that path.  Helping writers amplify their voices, giving constant notes to scripts, listening to their pitches and helping them package/sell their projects is my forever.

What gets you most excited about a writer's pitch?
It’s the passion that you can see in a writer’s eyes and their energy as they tell you about their pitch.  Why this project means so much to them. You feel it immediately!

What's one bit of advice that helps you the most in this industry?
Hollywood is a relationship game.  Make sure you stay in touch with everyone that you meet with now and forever.

What's your favorite non-industry-related hobby or activity?
Before the pandemic, I would be playing competitive beach volleyball in Santa Monica and Venice.  I’ve been playing for 10 years.
