How to Shine in a Writer's Room

Online Classes

Ever wondered what it’s really like inside a television writer’s room? What are the unwritten rules of how to behave? What terms and processes should every TV writer know? What’s the difference between a roundtable, a pre-greenlight room, and a full writers room? How does the hierarchy actually work? If you’ve asked yourself any of these questions, this one-day three-hour clinic is for you.

Led by Jeane Phan Wong, this session offers a rare insider look at how professional TV writer’s rooms operate.  Jeane sold several pilots, staffed in multiple rooms, worked in multiple rooms as an assistant, and is a former exec. She’ll share real-world insights on what it takes to shine in a room.

Up to eight participants will take part in a mock writers room, where we will collaboratively break a story for a one-hour drama series from beginning to end.

You can choose to:

  • Participate in the mock writers room (limited spots available)
  • Audit the session to observe, learn, and ask questions

At the end of the clinic, Jeane will lead a short lecture and feedback session, offering insights on writers room dynamics and practical advice on how to succeed once you're in the room.

This One-Day Clinic Will Cover:

  • The difference between a roundtable, pre-greenlight room, and full writers room
  • The hierarchy of a television writers room
  • Common writers room terminology used when breaking story
  • How to contribute effectively and what not to do in a room
  • What homework to do outside of the room to shine in the room
  • Pitching creatively while staying within budget
  • Pitching using phrases and certain terminology to land your pitches
  • How to share personal life experiences in the room effectively
  • Writers room etiquette and feedback (for clinic participants only)

Sign up for the webinar to audit and observe the session, or join the clinic to participate in the mock writers room experience!

More about
Jeane Wong
Writer
Rideback Circle, WGA Captain, SANDOKAN, AZNBBYGRL

A child of Vietnam War immigrants, Jeane is Vietnamese-Chinese. She was raised Buddhist in the San Gabriel Valley with stints in Orange County and a Mormon town in Nevada. Growing up, she developed a sweet tooth as a child working at her parents’ bakery. She grew up on a steady diet of Asian folklore, Sailor Moon, and weekly comic books. After interning in politics, getting certified as a First Responder, and a stint working at an oncology lab, she was on a pre-law public healthcare path. But this work convinced her to live by her favorite Han Solo line "Never tell me the odds" and dive into her real passion: Hollywood.

Jeane is a published author, journalist, and podcaster. Jeane has sold numerous pilots, a feature, and has experience producing television from prep to post. She staffed on Freemantle's SANDOKAN and consulted for Freeform's pilot AZNBBYGRL and for Mattel. She’s currently part of Rideback Circle and is a WGA Captain. Jeane has worked in different genres but her writing skews a tongue in cheek POV and dry wit. Jeane also has experience on the other side of the development in indie filmmaking at Uncommon Voices Collective. She loves character studies, love triangles, and big worlds. When not writing, Jeane is a cat mom to Gabby Soprano and a breakfast burrito sommelier.

Testimonials

I'm both very happy I had an opportunity to pitch for Jeane Wong and appreciate her feedback, all her time, and so many helpful suggestions/thoughts! I believe she's someone who really listens. I'm currently in the process of integrating her suggestion in my script, specifically the ending, so that it has even more surprise! So many great suggestions! I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to pitch for Jeane, and I plan to take other classes with her!
