Strap in for another success story! Today we're chatting with MK McGehee, who signed with Zero Gravity through a Roadmap program.
Submitted on 8/17/25
Firstly, tell us about yourself! Who are you as a writer & who did you end up signing with?
My name is MK and I’m a writer/director drawn to feminist psychological and body horror stories with a social edge. I signed with Rodrigo Moscosco at Zero Gravity who is just as passionate about the horror genre as I am!
How did you meet your now rep? What was that first interaction like and how did it lead to your professional relationship now?
I met Rodrigo during a one-on-one Zoom meeting through a recommendation by Roadmap. Our first meeting was wonderful - he enjoyed my script and we talked about my overall brand as a filmmaker (which is definitely in his wheelhouse). We stayed in touch via email and I sent him all the materials he requested, including my short films, loglines, 2-pagers and pitch decks. He liked what he saw and we arranged an in-person meeting which lasted almost 3 hours! Needless to say, we very much vibed in person and the rest is history.
From the moment you started training and/or working with Roadmap Writers, how long has it been before you secured your current representation?
Approximately 7 months.
How did (if at all) Roadmap Writers assist in getting you to this point? Do you think you could've made this step in your screenwriting career without Roadmap?
I do think I would have eventually found representation on my own, but it certainly would have taken MUCH longer and I’m not sure I would have found someone so perfectly suited to my brand of horror had it not been for Roadmap’s support and recommendations. Joey is genuinely committed to each and every writer coming through Roadmap and wants to see us all succeed. With his encouragement, and also the encouragement and guidance from Dorian, Terra, Alex and tons of other amazing people at RM, I finally had the forward momentum in my career I had been searching for for years.
What types of stories do you write? What's your "writer brand" and how do you think that helped you attract a good match for representation?
I am very firmly rooted within the horror genre and, even more specifically, feminist psychological body horror with a social edge. I found a way to express my brand as a filmmaker through Roadmap’s Career Writing program and that was enormously helpful in finding and securing representation. I think the more specific you can be with your brand as a writer or filmmaker the better - being this specific helped me find a manager who was also just as specific about the types of filmmakers he is passionate about and wants to represent.
Has your mindset about what you're writing changed now that you've added representation to your team? What's the biggest lesson you've learned or had to adapt to since you've been working with your rep?
My mindset hasn’t changed - as an independent and self-taught filmmaker I am always hustling and that won’t ever stop… even with a manager. Now is not the time to sit back and suddenly let someone else do all the work. If anything, having a manager means I need to get out there and hustle MORE because I now have the professional industry support that can help propel my career forward. Manager or no manager, we have to just keep writing, keep producing, keep directing, keep MAKING ART!
What do you hope your next steps are? What are your immediate goals now that you've landed representation?
My biggest priority right now is securing the rest of funding needed for my first feature so that we can hopefully start production next year. The script has a lot of momentum and Rodrigo is already taking steps to help me bring the entire project to fruition. It’s very exciting and I’m incredibly grateful to be able to begin securing such a dream team for my first feature.
In 10 years, what do you want your screenwriting career to look like?
Oh gosh. In ten years time I would hope to have at least 5 features I’ve written and directed out there in the world. Plus dozens of other projects I’ve helped develop in some way - either through co-writing, producing or directing. I’d like the production company I’ve already set up (Brown Hare Pictures) to be actively searching for and developing new work from exciting new writers and filmmakers. In ten years’ time, it won’t be just about me anymore - I would hope by then I’ve built a successful enough career that I can help other writers and directors break through in this industry—help them get their “big break” and pay it forward.
