Joanna Bala fled the Sri Lankan civil war at four years old and grew up in London, raised inside the diaspora culture Good Girls Don't... is set in, one that has never been centered in American prestige television. She broke into the Mayfair fashion buying offices at twenty-one with no experience or training, the only British Sri Lankan girl in those rooms, and stayed fifteen years as a global fashion merchant, building over $194M in product across Converse, Levi's, Ralph Lauren, Gap, and Guess Jeans, in London, Brussels, Melbourne, and Los Angeles. Reading rooms before they said what they wanted was her career, and Good Girls Don't... turns that instinct on a family that has spent four generations reading exactly what a room needs from them and calling the skill love. She has spent her life inside industries built on image, and she brings that fluency to a story about what image costs the people trained to hold it.
Good Girls Don't... is her second completed pilot, alongside How to Disappoint Your Parents, both drawn from different decades of the same life, the rooms she was never qualified for and stayed in anyway.
