Why Roadmap Authors is a Gamechanger in the Publishing Industry
By Selene Castrovilla

Most of us are familiar with the philosophical question: ”If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” I’d like to pose a similar literary question: “If an author writes a book and nobody reads it, does it make a sound?”

While debate wages on about the tree, the answer to the book question is a loud “no.” I’m referring to a metaphorical sound. Seventeen years ago I began my publishing journey with one quest: to be heard. I just got the news that my thirteenth book is releasing in Summer 2022 — and that makes two coming that year! Signing a book contract never gets old, because it means that my voice will be out there again, connecting with readers and being heard.

Connection is what everything’s about, isn’t it? In this crazy time we’re experiencing, we cherish connection even more. It is a huge part of being human. Published authors connect with their readers without ever meeting them— but how did they get the opportunity to be published? Through connection.

The brutal truth is that many amazing stories are not published because the author cannot make that connection with someone in publishing. Like dating, it takes time, energy, and commitment to find this match. But without the right place to start looking, the match can never happen.

This has been a huge challenge for authors, new and seasoned. How does one make a connection with an editor or agent? How can one be heard by them? I liken the manuscript submission process to the plight of Whoville’s citizens in Horton Hears A Who, shouting, “We are here! WE ARE HERE!”

My publishing career has hinged upon connections, with nearly every contract stemming from an initial personal meeting. All these years I wished for more consistent opportunities to forge relationships with publishing executives.

When I turned to screenwriting, a second passion, I discovered Roadmap. Jumping in, I worked my way to Top Tier. It has been the most amazing experience! That’s why I’m so excited for Roadmap’s Author Division.

Roadmap has proven itself a continual conduit toward television and film executives— the proof is in their success stories. Now, Roadmap is bringing its same dedication and continuity to authors—offering a career writing program full of editors and agents, as well as à la carte opportunities.

I know Roadmap works. I’ve experienced this firsthand (I’m number 99 on the success story list) and so have more than 120 of my peers.

Authors, our time has come. We are here! And Roadmap hears us.
