Weekend Box Office Top Ten:

DOWNTON ABBEY opened at #1 with a surprise $31M (Million) domestically, and $61.8M worldwide, becoming the biggest opening weekend in the history of Focus Features and giving Universal another win. The older fanbase showed up for this leap from television to feature franchise, and it is likely that a sequel will be produced, given these strong numbers.

AD ASTRA opened at #2 with a poor $19.2M domestic and $45.2M worldwide. Produced for around $100M plus marketing after reshoots added close to $20M on the original budget, this will be a financial loss for New Regency and Fox.

RAMBO: LAST BLOOD opened at #3 with $19M from Lionsgate, which is an okay result given the production budget of just $50M plus marketing. International is expected to be strong, while Lionsgate is only responsible for the domestic costs on this Stallone actioner.

IT: CHAPTER 2 is #4 with $17.2M, a domestic total of $179.1M, and a global take of $358.8M. Produced for around $80M plus marketing, this is already profitable for WB, with more to be earned before their next killer clown, JOKER, dominates the early October box office.

HUSTLERS is #5 with $17M, a domestic total of $62.5M, and an early $72.3M worldwide. Produced for just $20M plus marketing, this is the big hit that STX needed right now, already profitable after just two weeks of play and with awards buzz for star Jennifer Lopez building.

THE LION KING is #6 with $2.5M, a domestic haul of $537.5M, and an impressive global total of $1.629 Billion for Disney, ranking as the seventh biggest film of all-time worldwide, not adjusted for inflation.

GOOD BOYS is #7 with $2.5M, a domestic total of $77.3M, and a worldwide total of $98.7M. This $20M original comedy hit from Universal will pass the $100M benchmark globally sometime this next week, in a needed win for R-rated comedies.

ANGEL HAS FALLEN is #8 with $2.4M, a domestic total of $64.6M, and a worldwide total of $118.2M and climbing. Produced for only $40M plus marketing, the third installment of this popular original action franchise, which began life as a spec script, has already become profitable, with a fourth film likely for star Gerard Butler.

OVERCOMER is #9 with $1.5M, and a total now of $31.5M. Produced for only $5M plus marketing, this is another profitable faith-based film.

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW is #10 with $1.4M, a domestic total of $170.6M, and a global haul which has now brought in an impressive $750M for Universal, the fourth biggest film in the franchise. Produced for $200M, this is a solid profit for the studio, and will probably see another Hobbs & Shaw film put into production.

Next weekend is quiet, with the only major new release being animated family pic ABOMINABLE, ahead of WB's JOKER which launches in two weeks and is on track for a massive debut in the $80-100M range.
