Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME debuted at #1 with $93.6M (Million), a massive six-day total debut of $185M domestic, and ten-day global debut (counting China, where the film was released a week early) of $580M. By tomorrow it is expected this film will pass the $600M mark globally, with a lot more to be earned throughout the month of July. Produced for $160M plus marketing, this is already profitable for the studio. This film should also have no problem passing the $1 Billion benchmark, becoming the first Spider-Man to hit that number, in another major win for Marvel Studios and Sony, as their partnership over this character has continued to yield impressive financial numbers for all.
TOY STORY 4 is #2 with $34.3M, a big domestic total now of $306.5M, and nearly $650M worldwide. This is another successful Pixar film, continuing Disney's winning streak over the summer.
YESTERDAY held well at #3 with $10.7M, a drop of just -36.8%. The domestic total now stands at $36.8M, and worldwide is an early $56.9M. Produced for only $26M plus marketing, this will have no problem becoming profitable for Universal, in a needed win for original material and the romantic genre, which has been on an upswing with audiences.
ANNABELLE COMES HOME is #4 with $9.7M, a domestic total of $50M, and $134.7M worldwide. This one will finish as the lowest film in the franchise, but will still be profitable for the studio, with THE CONJURING 3 set as the next installment of this shared universe of horror films.
ALADDIN is #5 with $7.6M, a domestic total of $320.7M, and a stunning global haul of $921M. Produced for $183M plus marketing, this one has been wildly profitable, far exceeding everyone's expectations, and giving Disney their biggest Memorial Day Weekend success of all-time. As it stands now, Disney has released the top four domestic titles of this year, continuing their dominance over the box office.
MIDSOMMAR opened at #6 with $6.5M and a total debut of $10.9M, an "okay" albeit underwhelming result for this A24 horror title, as the specialty label has struggled this year to find a hit.
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 is #7 with $4.7M, a domestic total of $140.7M, and $262.4M worldwide. Produced for $80M plus marketing, this is profitable for Universal and Illumination, though far below expectations, and marking an unexpected low for the animation studio which has produced hit after hit.
MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL is #8 with $3.6M, a domestic total of $71.9M, and $244M globally. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this may be able to hit break-even or slightly profitable range, but is such a disappointing result for Sony that it's unlikely the series will be revived again for a long time, if ever.
AVENGERS: ENDGAME is #9 with $3.1M, a domestic total of $847.8M, and $2.772 Billion worldwide, just $15.5 million less than the top film of all-time globally, AVATAR, which brought in $2.788 Billion. Domestically, the top film remains THE FORCE AWAKENS, with $936.6 Million.
ROCKETMAN is #10 with $2.7M, a domestic total of $89.1M, and $173.8M worldwide. Produced for $40M plus marketing, this biopic has been very nicely profitable for Paramount.
Next week will be ruled by Spider-Man again, as horror title CRAWL, and action/comedy STUBER make their debuts, each looking to connect with their respective audiences in the crowded and competitive summer marketplace.
