Weekend Box Office Top Ten:

THE LION KING is #1 again with $75.5M (Million), a domestic total of $350.7M, and a gigantic $962.6M globally after just a couple of weeks, as this Disney smash will earn will past $1 Billion for Disney, becoming their 4th film of the year to reach that benchmark. In fact, Disney is set for at least six billion-plus hits this year with FROZEN 2 and THE RISE OF SKYWALKER releasing during the holidays, and could hit lucky number seven if TOY STORY 4 is able to reach that number, which will be close. Produced for somewhere around $250M plus marketing, LION KING will be another highly profitable film for the House of Mouse.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD opened at #2 with an impressive $40.3M debut, well above where tracking had it, to mark the biggest opening weekend in Quentin Tarantino's career. International has yet to roll out on this film, which cost $90M to produce plus marketing; but using INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS and DJANGO UNCHAINED as comps, this will have no problem earning at least $200M overseas, and should be nicely profitable for Sony.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is #3 with $12.2M, a domestic total now of $344.4M and a huge global total of $1.036 Billion. This is the first Spider-Man film to ever reach the $1 Billion mark, and is only the second film from Sony to hit that number, after SKYFALL, which earned $1.1 Billion worldwide. This film could top that release to become Sony's biggest success, ever. A third film in the franchise, though not yet officially announced, is in development.

TOY STORY 4 is #4 with $9.8M, a domestic total of $395.4M (meaning it will reach the $400M milestone sometime this week), and $917.9M globally. This is now the fourth biggest Pixar release of all-time; and the only question remaining is whether it will hit the $1 Billion mark, or fall just short. Either way, it is a tremendous success for the animation studio and Disney.

CRAWL held on at #5 with $4M, a domestic total of $31.4M, and $45.8M worldwide, with a lot of international markets yet to debut. Produced for $13.5M plus marketing, this film will be nicely profitable for Paramount, and should end up with a final domestic total past $40M.

YESTERDAY is #6 with $3M, a domestic total of $63.3M, and $109.6M worldwide. Produced for $26M plus marketing, this Universal romantic drama has been another successful original sleeper hit, playing as counterprogramming to the blockbusters. Along with CRAWL (neither based on any pre-existing source material), this summer has proven that well-made, commercially-minded originals kept at a reasonable budget can, and do, find their audiences theatrically.

ALADDIN is #7 with $2.7M, a domestic total of $345.9M, and $1.009 Billion globally, as the Disney smash wraps up its run, also becoming Will Smith's top-grossing film in the process.

STUBER is #8 with $1.6M, a domestic total of just $20.1M, and $25M worldwide. Produced for $16M plus marketing, this is a moderate financial loser for Fox, continuing their streak of bad luck since being acquired by Disney. The studio hopes to change its fortunes at the end of the year with THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN, AD ASTRA, FORD V. FERRARI, and SPIES IN DISGUISE all still on deck.

ANNABELLE COMES HOME is #9 with $1.5M, a domestic total of $69.7M, and a very nice $207M worldwide for WB, making this a solid low-budget horror hit for the studio, which is looking at much bigger successes this fall, with IT: CHAPTER 2, JOKER, and DOCTOR SLEEP.

THE FAREWELL is #10 with $1.5M and a total of $3.6M, playing in only 135 theaters for A24.

Next weekend sees the final blockbuster release of Summer 2019, with FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW looking at impressive numbers and bringing the season of summer tentpoles to a close. After that, August will quiet down and largely be ruled by holdovers, though several upcoming films have the potential to perform well over the month.
