Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
THE LION KING opened at #1 with a gigantic $185M (Million) domestic debut, and even more massive $531M globally, including an early start in China. The expectation is that the final numbers may be even higher, as Disney is being conservative in its domestic estimate. Either way, this is a start of over half a billion dollars for one of the biggest global launches of all-time. Disney easily has a film on their hands which will cross the $1 Billion benchmark, in yet another win for the studio and their impressive 2019 slate.
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME is #2 with $21M, a domestic total of $319.6M, and a huge $970.7M globally, as this one will handily reach over $1 Billion by the end of next weekend worldwide, becoming the first film in the history of this franchise to hit that milestone, and giving both Sony and Marvel a big victory in their partnership.
TOY STORY 4 is #3 with $14.6M, a domestic total of $375.5M, and an impressive $859.4M worldwide. So far this is Pixar's fourth biggest film ever domestically, and their fifth biggest globally, as the Toy Story brand proves to be their most enduring, between the four films and television specials.
CRAWL held at #4 with $6M, a solid domestic total so far of $23.8M, and an early $33.7M worldwide with only 26% of international having opened. Produced for $13.5M plus marketing, this will have no problem becoming profitable for Paramount, and a nice sleeper success alongside other summer creature features including THE SHALLOWS and 47 METERS DOWN, the latter of which this film is pacing almost identically to.
YESTERDAY continues to play at #5 with another $5.1M, bringing the domestic total to $57.5M, and worldwide to $98.1M. This Universal hit will cross the $100M mark globally within a day or two, in another needed win for original material made at a reasonable budget. In this case, the musical romantic dramedy cost only $26M plus marketing, and will reach more than 4X its budget.
STUBER is #6 with $4M and a total of only $16M. Produced for around that much, plus marketing, it could still reach break-even depending on how international performs. Either way, this is another disappointment for Fox.
ALADDIN is #7 with $3.8M, a domestic total of $340M, and a fantastic $988.8M globally, as this Disney behemoth will finish with a worldwide total of over $1 Billion, playing as the biggest surprise of the summer.
ANNABELLE COMES HOME is #8 with $2.6M, a domestic total of $66.5M, and $196M worldwide, approaching the $200M mark in another win for the CONJURING line, and for WB, which has largely sat out the summer ahead of IT CHAPTER 2 in September, JOKER in October, and DOCTOR SLEEP in November, for a more impressive and lucrative fall slate.
MIDSOMMAR is #9 with $1.5M, and a total now of $22.4M for A24, set to finish in the same range as fellow studio successes THE WITCH and EX MACHINA.
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 is #10 with $1.5M, a domestic total of $151.5M, and $318.5M worldwide. Produced for $80M plus marketing, it is a solidly profitable endeavor from Illumination and Universal.
Other Notables: AVENGERS: ENDGAME has now topped AVATAR to become the highest-grossing film ever worldwide, not adjusted for inflation, at a total of $2.790 Billion. The top domestic release remains THE FORCE AWAKENS, with an unbeatable $936M.
Next weekend will see The Lion King rule once again, along with the debut of Tarantino's highly-anticipated ONCE UPON A TIME...IN HOLLYWOOD.
