Weekend Box Office Top Ten:

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS opened at #1 with a disappointing $49M (Million) domestic and $179M worldwide, both well below what tracking had suggested, and the lowest start in the Monsterverse series counting GODZILLA (2014) and KONG: SKULL ISLAND. Produced for $170M plus marketing, this film is going to struggle to reach break-even theatrically, and definitely won't hit profitability. The GODZILLA VS. KONG film is currently in post-production however, and is set to hit theaters next March.

ALADDIN is #2 with $42.3M, a domestic total of $185M, and $445.9M globally. Produced for $183M plus marketing, this film will easily be past the $500M threshold by next weekend, as it cruises towards profitability for Disney. This is finally the Memorial Day success the studio has been looking for after trying to launch films in that frame over the last several years, including SOLO. This is another win for the studio, ahead of other summer surefire hits TOY STORY 4 and THE LION KING, each tracking for domestic starts of over $200M.

ROCKETMAN opened at #3 with $25M domestic and $56.2M worldwide, a terrific launch for this biopic which carries a budget of only $40M plus marketing. This will be nicely profitable for Paramount, and should keep playing well both in the U.S. and overseas in the coming weeks.

MA opened at #4 with $18.6M, a very good start for this Universal/Blumhouse release which only cost $5M to produce plus marketing. This will easily be profitable, and another win for original horror/thrillers.

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM is #5 with $11M, a domestic total of $125.7M, and $221.6M worldwide, as the Lionsgate hit keeps marching on, a promising sign for how lucrative the fourth film, BALLERINA spinoff, and THE CONTINENTAL television series will be.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME is #6 with $7.8M, a domestic total of $815.5M, and $2.713 Billion worldwide, as the Marvel heroes wind down their stunning global total, and will finish as the second biggest film ever domestically behind STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU is #7 with $6.6M, a domestic total of $130.6M, and $392M worldwide. The film will be past the $400M threshold this upcoming week sometime. Produced for $150M plus marketing, it will end its theatrical run somewhere between break-even and profitability, and is expected to be a big performer in the home markets, with a sequel already announced.

BOOKSMART is #8 with $3.3M and a total of $14.3M. Between the smaller budget and digital advertising spend, this one will be in okay shape if it can hit $20M domestic, but it's still a disappointing result given the critical praise and high marks from the audiences who have shown up.

BRIGHTBURN fell to #9 with $2.3M, a domestic total of $14.2M, and $24.7M worldwide. Produced for $6M plus marketing, this is a theatrical disappointment but could end up profitable if it catches on with the home markets such as DVD/Blu-Ray and SVOD.

THE HUSTLE is #10 with $1.3M, a domestic total of $33.1M, and $73.9M worldwide.

Next weekend sees launches for DARK PHOENIX as the final X-MEN film from Fox made before the acquisition of the studio by Disney (where the mutants are expected to be folded into the MCU with a reboot), THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2, and LATE NIGHT.
