Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
BIRDS OF PREY opened at #1 with a disappointing $33.2M (Million) well below where tracking had the film domestically; and an even more disastrous $81M worldwide. As the film opened in every major territory except for China (where it won't be playing) and Japan (still on deck), there is very little runway for this WB/DC Comics girl-power actioner. With a budget of $84M plus marketing, this will lose money for the studio.
BAD BOYS FOR LIFE is #2 with $12M, a domestic total of $166M, and a global haul of $336M for Sony. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this film is already nicely profitable, with a fourth film in development.
1917 is #3 with $9M, a domestic total of $132.5M, and a worldwide total of $287M. Produced for $90M plus marketing, this Universal awards smash has now become profitable, with more to be earned.
DOLITTLE is #4 with $6.6M, a domestic total of $63.9M, and a worldwide total of just $158.6M. Produced for $175M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for Universal.
JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL continues to play at #5 with $5.5M, a domestic total of $298.4M (soon to pass the $300M threshold), and an impressive global haul which now stands at $768M for Sony.
THE GENTLEMEN is #6 with $4.1M, a domestic total of $26.8M, and a worldwide total of $60M. With strong holds and a holiday next weekend, this STX release should wind up profitable for the studio theatrically, with more to be earned via the home release.
GRETEL & HANSEL is #7 with $3.5M, and a total of $11.5M for United Artists Releasing.
KNIVES OUT is #8 with $2.3M, a domestic total of $158.9M, and a global total of $299.6M, as this $40M production from Lionsgate and MRC will cross the worldwide $300M threshold this upcoming week. A sequel has also officially been announced.
LITTLE WOMEN is #9 with $2.3M, a domestic total of $102.6M, and an impressive $177M worldwide. Produced for $40M plus marketing, this has been a nice hit for Sony.
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is #10 with $2.2M, a domestic total of $510M, and $1.061 Billion globally for Disney, passing the worldwide total of ROGUE ONE to become the third most successful film in the franchise since Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, albeit an underwhelming result.
Next weekend sees debuts for family film SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, Blumhouse's horror-fueled adaptation of FANTASY ISLAND, and romantic drama THE PHOTOGRAPH, each hoping to bring in their respective audiences over Valentine's Day and the extended President's Day stretch.
