Weekend Box Office Top Ten:

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER remained #1 for the first weekend of the new decade, bringing in $33.7M (Million) for a domestic total which now stands at $450.7M and a global haul of $918.7M. The film is expected to pass the $1 Billion mark next weekend, the seventh film released by Disney in 2019 to reach that milestone. All in, the sequel trilogy will have earned more than $4 billion worldwide just in theatrical alone for the studio, making all three films a tremendously profitable endeavor.

JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL is #2 with $26.5M, a domestic total of $236.2M, and $610.2M globally, with more to be earned. Produced for only $125M plus marketing costs, this sequel is wildly profitable for Sony, and another (final?) installment in the rebooted franchise in inevitable.

LITTLE WOMEN is #3 with $13.5M, a domestic total of $60M, and a worldwide total of $80.4M so far. Produced for $40M plus marketing, this will be nicely profitable for Sony, in addition to its critical and audience acclaim, and awards nominations.

THE GRUDGE opened at #4 with a disappointing $11.3M domestic and $17.1M worldwide debut for Sony. While below expectations, the film only cost around $10-12M to produce, plus a moderate marketing spend, meaning that all told it should reach profitability thanks to international and the home release.

FROZEN 2 is #5 with $11.2M, a domestic total of $449.8M, and $1.325 Billion globally, to now become the highest-grossing animated film ever, not adjusted for inflation. While it's not official yet, a third film is very likely at some point, with the only question being how long the wait will be this time.

SPIES IN DISGUISE is #6 with $10M, a domestic total of $46.7M, and $88.8M worldwide. There is more to be earned on this Fox animated film overseas, where the rollout has been staggered.

KNIVES OUT is #7 with $9M, a domestic total of $130.2M, and an impressive $247M globally, as the film marches past the $250M mark within days. Produced for only $40M plus marketing, this has been tremendously profitable for Lionsgate and MRC, with plans already announced for a sequel.

UNCUT GEMS is #8 with $7.8M, and a total of $36.8M and climbing. The film is expected to surpass HEREDITARY and could even earn more than LADY BIRD, to become either the second biggest or top film released by A24. Either way, it is a major win for the distributor, as original material continues to thrive theatrically at the right price.

BOMBSHELL is #9 with $4M and a total of just under $25M for Lionsgate. Produced for around $40M, this Fox News pic will be a moderate financial loss for all involved.

CATS is #10 with $2.6M, a domestic total of $24.6M, and $57M worldwide. Produced for $95M plus an expensive marketing campaign by Universal, this film will be a sharp financial loss.

Next weekend sees expansions for WW1 film 1917, and legal drama JUST MERCY, as well as debuts for comedy LIKE A BOSS, and sci-fi thriller UNDERWATER, while the new year will continue to mostly be ruled by the holiday holdovers.
