Weekend Box Office Top Ten:
JOKER is #1 again with $55M (Million), falling just -42.8% and bringing the domestic total to $192.7M, with the global haul reaching $543.9M. At this point the film not only should reach more than $300M domestically, but has a real shot at the $1 Billion mark worldwide. It is essentially playing to the same numbers as an event DC film, or the same numbers as a BATMAN film, with audiences not the least deterred by the R-rating or edgier elements.
THE ADDAMS FAMILY opened at #2 with a strong $30M debut, above expectations. With no direct competition for awhile and Halloween still two and half weeks away, expect to see this family animated title have strong holds, and combined with international, should definitely reach profitability.
GEMINI MAN opened at #3 with a disastrous $20M domestic and $59M worldwide. Produced for around $140M plus marketing, this will be a significant financial loss for Skydance and Paramount. This is also one of Will Smith's worst showings in a large-budget release, though audiences may have felt like two Smith vehicles in one year was too much, following the massive success of ALADDIN.
ABOMINABLE is #4 with $6.1M, a domestic total of only $47.9M, and $108M worldwide. This will be a financial loss for Dreamworks Animation and Universal, and one of the lowest-grossing films in the history of the animation studio.
DOWNTON ABBEY is #5 with $4.9M, a domestic total which now stands at an impressive $82.6M, and $152.6M worldwide. For Focus Features this is about to become their biggest domestic hit ever, and unsurprisingly, talks are already underway for a sequel.
HUSTLERS is #6 with $3.8M, a domestic total now of $98M, and a worldwide total of $121.6M. By next weekend, the film will pass the $100M threshold domestically, in a huge victory for STX, becoming only the third film in the studio's history to reach that number over their four year history. At a budget of only $20M plus marketing, this has also been significantly profitable.
JUDY is #7 with $3.2M, and a total now of $14.9M, a solid result for this specialty release from Roadside Attractions.
IT: CHAPTER TWO is #8 with $3.2M, a domestic total now of $207M, and a global haul which has reached $445M, significantly lower than the first film, but still making this highly profitable for WB, and among the biggest horror films of all-time.
JEXI opened at #9 with a terrible $3.1M debut for Lionsgate, as the film was completely rejected by audiences and will disappear quickly. While it is one of the worst openings ever, it isn't the worst opening for a wide-release this year; this earned more than WB'S THE GOLDFINCH, which opened to $2.6M.
AD ASTRA is #10 with $1.9M, a domestic total of $47M, and a worldwide total of $120M. Produced for $100M plus marketing, this will be another financial loss for Fox. Similar to Will Smith and GEMINI MAN, it is also likely that audiences who flocked to ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD did not want to see a second Brad Pitt vehicle in such a short time.
Next weekend will see villains rule the top of the box office again when Disney opens MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL. Also coming next weekend is ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP, and limited openings for JOJO RABBIT, THE LIGHTHOUSE, and JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT.
