Weekend Box Office 7.25.21

OLD opened at #1 with $16.5M (Million) domestically and an early $23M worldwide for Universal over a quiet weekend that is down sharply amid concerns over the Delta variant of the Coronavirus and studio product which is failing to drive audiences into the multiplex. While overall numbers are down, however, this Universal thriller from N. Night Shyamalan on its own cost only $18M to produce plus marketing costs and will easily be profitable, representing another success for Universal this year.

SNAKE EYES: GI JOE ORIGINS opened at #2 with a disastrous $13.3M domestically for Paramount. Produced for $88M plus marketing, even international should it be robust will not be enough to save this film from losing money for the studio, especially as word of mouth and the CinemaScore exits were a B- from audiences. While the G.I. JOE franchise has never connected well on the big screen, the hope was that the popular ninja characters could be successful on their own in a spin-off/origin tale. That didn't happen, and it is a safe bet that there will not be another attempt at this brand theatrically.

BLACK WIDOW held on at #3 with $11.6M, a domestic total of nearly $155M, and a global total of almost $315M theatrically. Premier Access has also delivered over $100M to bring the overall total past $415M counting all revenue streams. This is without any release date set in China, as their situation with U.S. studio releases remains stressed, which is particularly damaging to Marvel. That said, the film, which cost $200M plus marketing, should be able to reach break-even range in the next couple of weeks and may ultimately yield profit even if down from other recent hits from the MCU brand.

SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY collapsed at #4 with $9.5M (down -69% from its opening weekend) to bring the domestic total to $51.3M and worldwide to around $94M. Produced for $150M plus marketing, this will be a sharp financial loss for WB.

F9: THE FAST SAGA is #5 with $4.7M, a domestic total of $163.3M, and a decent $621M global haul — the first studio film to break the $600M threshold since the start of the pandemic. While this is down dramatically from what the core franchise is expected to bring in, the film has reached profitability for Universal with more to be earned. At a budget of $200M plus marketing, final numbers may reach about the range of HOBBS & SHAW, though global will be a bit lower than the spin-off entry.

ESCAPE ROOM: TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS is #6 with $3.4M, a domestic total of just $16M, and at least $21M worldwide. Produced for $15M plus marketing, this will be a moderate loss for Sony theatrically, though could yield profit via its home release, between PVOD, streaming, and Blu-Ray sales.

THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS is #7 with $2.7M, a domestic total of $50M, and an early worldwide total of at least $54M. This is unlikely to be profitable theatrically for Universal, but has been used to bolster its Peacock streaming platform. International success is still to be determined, as many key markets have yet to open.

THE FOREVER PURGE is #8 with $2.3M, a solid domestic total of $40M, and more than $55M worldwide. Produced for only $18M plus marketing, this has already made over three times its budget for Universal, with another sequel in development.

A QUIET PLACE PART II is #9 with $1.2M, a domestic total of $157.5M, and an impressive $290M worldwide. Produced for $60M plus marketing, this has been a nice success for Paramount during the summer, with a third entry already announced.

ROADRUNNER is #10 with $830K and a total of $3.7M.

Next weekend sees the release of Disney's JUNGLE CRUISE which will simultaneously be available on Premier Access, while THE SUICIDE SQUAD from WB is on deck with previews beginning Thursday August 5th.
