Interview with March 2021 Diversity Co-Winner - Ashley V. Hudson

How long have you been writing and what made you want to write in the first place?
From a young age, I have had an interest in reading and writing. As a youth leader at my church, I wrote Christmas, Easter, and Black History month plays for the children and young adult programs. While the interest remained throughout my undergraduate and law school matriculation, it was not until my last semester of law school, where my interests were reimagined. During my 3L year, I enrolled in an entertainment law course (How To Do A Film Deal) which introduced me to various elements of filmmaking, with writing being an essential component. In that course, we created our own short films. After completing and presenting my short film, I knew I had reignited my passion for writing, therefore three months after graduation, I moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of my happiness.

What genre do you prefer to write in? What draws you to that genre?
I am a one-hour drama girl. I love character-driven dramas that are so authentic, you can't remove your eyes from the screen. But, I also enjoy laughing. Shows that are rich in character which allows the audience to laugh, not because the character has done something goofy but because the situation is so true to life, draw me in.

Tell us three things you're currently digging.
I have become obsessed with podcasts. There is an amazing podcast called The Diversity Hires hosted by Shurkree Hassan Tilghman and Sherman Payne. Of course, it is about writing. The hosts are knowledgeable and engaging. They drop gems every episode and in turn, I feel more confident that I am on the right path. It is an amazing podcast. I would give it a 10/10, definitely worth checking out. Regarding food, HelloFresh has been my go-to. We are almost one year into our COVID quarantine and I am home the majority of the time, like the rest of California. Although quarantining, my time is still pretty limited but HelloFresh allows me to cook a quick but delicious meal. Shoutout to no grocery shopping and appropriate serving sizes. I have been enjoying great content including many limited series. The limited series is a journey that does not require years of my life and usually, there is just the right number of episodes to keep me fully engaged. It's the perfect weekend binge.

What interested you about the Roadmap Diversity Initiative?
I signed up for Roadmap a while back and I really appreciate the daily emails and unlimited resources. The information is not only super helpful but is often uplifting. I applied for the Roadmap Diversity Initiative because of my desire to network, learn, and hone my writing and development skills. The Pitch Prep Program is the perfect opportunity to meet individuals who can help show me the “road map” to perfecting my Pitch, which is the next step after writing the perfect script.

Where can we find you?
When it comes to social media, I lack imagination, but here are my handles.
