Interview with June Diversity Initiative Winner

What genre do you prefer to write in? What draws you to that genre?
I mainly write comedy with a focus on queer storylines. All I had growing up as a closeted gay Latina in the south (in a Catholic school of all places y'all) was The L word, Ellen, and maybe some tertiary characters from a League of Their Own?! I'm really writing for my teenage self who had a secret crush on Jennifer Love Hewitt growing up and would have loved to have seen some positive queer storylines on TV.

Who are the writers that inspire you?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Phoebe Robinson, Paula Pell whose name I thought was Paul Lapell growing up until I realized her real name and that she was a badass queer female writer. I like when a writer is hyper self-aware but still unapologetic about it.

What things you're currently digging?
Euphoria on HBO is so heartbreakingly good! I'm really obsessed with Jenny Lewis' new album On The Line and the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team at the World Cup- you guys we should all be watching the games in another tab at work. Truly, there's no excuse. And Jennifer Love Hewitt.

What interested you about Roadmap's Diversity Initiative?
First of all, the program has exceeded all of my expectations. The possibility of working with people who are excited to bring diverse stories forward was really appealing. It also felt like a safe and supportive space to test out things writers may feel shaky about. The Roadmap crew really champions their writers and makes sure they have every advantage and every opportunity.

Where can we find you?
