Roadmap's Exclusive Interview!

What elements are you most looking for when listening to a pitch?

A unique, attention grabbing thematically resonant story that is also commercially salient.

What's the most common mistake you see when writers pitch?

Goes far too long and involves too much plot. I'd also make sure to use comps and visuals if they help.

What makes you keep turning the page?

Quick, breezy writing that is not weighed down by lengthy action scenes or dialogue that is hard to follow.

What is one of the biggest pitfalls a writer can fall victim to when writing a script?

Especially at the beginning, I'd look to tell stories that are fairly simple structurally and thematically. I often see the biggest problems arise when writers endeavor to tell a story that involves too many characters, too much world creation or too much bureaucracy. Think EX MACHINA, THOROUGHBREDS, THE FAREWELL, JOHN WICK as examples of great first features that involve just a few central but beautifully nuanced characters and a clear emotional arc (and yes, I know Alex Garland had written before but EX MACHINA is his first directorial debut).

Pitch Tips

All about theme! What are we supposed to feel at the end of the pilot/movie? Comps are always great. Cut the fat. And yes, make me laugh. That never hurts.
