Pitch Tips

Concept and then character, character, character. I like to read scripts and encourage writers with potential - even if their talent is very raw.

About Your Host

Val McElroy has been development executive and production executive at several companies including Atlantic Entertainment and Green/Epstein Productions. While at Green/Epstein she produced several TV movies - two of which she also wrote for Lifetime (SPIRIT [nominated for a Genesis award] and HEART OF THE STORM). As a writer herself, Val understands the needs and concerns of writers.

Val has been partnered with Doug Draizin in management company Epigram for a number of years. The thrust of their business is the management of writers and directors. Many of Epigram’s clients are taken on fresh out of undergrad or masters’ programs. Epigram currently has writers working at Netflix, Lucasfilm, eOne, Hallmark, and AMC.

As a former teacher of high school English and Drama, Val remains committed to giving back to those just launching their careers. She reads Spring Competition scripts for UCLA writing masters. This includes submitting comments on how to improve the material as well as including as many positive comments as she can about the script. Val is also a mentor for Loyola Marymount writing master graduates.

Val is a graduate of Michigan State University with a BFA in English, Theatre, and Education. She subsequently completed a year of post-baccalaureate study in business and communications.
