About Your Host

Helena Vilaplana graduated in Media Studies from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with a specialization course in Film Marketing, Distribution and Sales from the ESCAC Film School of Catalonia. For over a decade, she produced documentaries and factual shows for radio and television, worked in festivals like DocsBarcelona, and helped marketing films for theatrical release, festival launch, and award campaigns. After two years at the European Commission’s "Creative Europe" program, Helena received the prestigious "laCaixa” Foundation scholarship and moved to Los Angeles to attend the USC’s School of Cinematic Arts – Peter Stark Producing Program. Since earning her MFA, she has focused primarily in film and TV development and has worked for producers and talent like Roy Lee (The Lego Movie, It), Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea) or John Middleton (Bates Motel, The Disaster Artist). On top of her independent producing endeavors, Helena is also a story producer for Audible podcasts and part of the screening teams at Fantastic Fest, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and Scout Film Festival. She enjoys finding emerging voices in filmmaking, smart sci-fi and horror films, and inspiring stories about women in STEM. Helena is a member of Latinos en Hollywood/Latin Tracking Board, Sundance Institute and Women in Film.
