Special Webinar Event: Script to Screen

Script to Screen: Long Gone By

Saturday, 6/13 @ 11:00am - 12:30pm PT

We all know that projects change from script to screen for a whole host of reasons: different interpretations in the cast and crew, production restraints, etc. Maybe the actor found different emotional layers to play with or the director wanted to emphasize a new theme. Maybe it was raining one day and the production had to move indoors for the big romantic moment.
But with all of these potential changes, how does a writer preserve the heart of their story without hindering other creatives or the practical needs of production?
To explore all this and more, Roadmap invites David Wappel to the virtual stage to discuss his script LONG GONE BY and the final film released to HBO.

This session will be recorded so if you sign up but can't make it live, you will receive the recording 48 hours later!

About Your Host

Originally from North Carolina, David Wappel pursued a career in production before more recently turning to screenwriting. Though primarily a feature writer focusing on grounded genre, Wappel has written for television and short form as well. His recent work can be seen on HBO in the film Long Gone By for which he wrote the screenplay. He has also consulted on multiple screenplays, including Angel Has Fallen, and the recent doc Quest of the Muscle Nerd.

He was named a Top 25 Screenwriter to Watch in 2020 by the ISA. In 2019 his spec script The Last Farm placed in the HUMANITAS Category at the Austin Film Festival, and won a fellowship to attend the Fall 2019 Stowe Story Lab.

Wappel often writes stories with themes of reluctant leadership, moments of private courage, and the complications of sibling relationships. Besides his own writing, Wappel works one-on-one with other writers developing their stories. When not writing he’s likely reading Tolkien or Shakespeare, or out sailing.
