To say that the television landscape has changed in recent years with the rise of riveting prestige TV dramas is an understatement. TV dramas have been around for as long as TV has, of course, but they’ve taken on a new and exciting role in the culture and industry over the past 20 or so years. From THE SOPRANOS to BREAKING BAD, TV dramas have captured our imagination in ways they haven’t before, and deciding to roll up your sleeves and write your own is a great decision in this current marketplace.
Before you get typing, though, you should make sure you understand the various possible plot formats, conventions, and structures you want to write your pilot in. That’s why Roadmap invited Emily Thomas to give us all a crash course of pilot writing from A to Z!

Emily Thomas is a writer and producer of dramatic content, most notably for the acclaimed Netflix Original Series LONGMIRE, for which she served first as the show’s Writer Assistant and Script Coordinator, and later as the designated on-set Creative Producer.
Prior to her time on LONGMIRE, Emily worked for the William Morris Endeavor agency, Jerry Bruckheimer Productions, New Regency Productions, and Kartemquin Documentary Films. She attended Columbia College Chicago, earning a Bachelor of the Arts in Television Writing and Producing and graduating Summa Cum Laude.
Emily is currently the Media Programming Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Center for Arts + Media, where she teaches courses in television writing. Additionally, Emily is an adjunct instructor at La Roche University, and guest lectures for Point Park University and Robert Morris University.
A Pittsburgh native, Emily’s personal work explores the intricacies of Appalachian culture, giving voice to an often-ignored and underserved region of the country. She is particularly passionate about stories that speak to the complexities of loss and survival, in all their many forms.
