Interview with August 2020 Diversity Winner - Jennifer Irons
How long have you been writing and what made you want to write in the first place?
I wrote my first short story in elementary school. My 6th-grade teacher told me he thought I could write and encouraged me to pursue it. Shortly after that I fell in love with movies and watching stories unfold on the big screen. However, I didn't continue with my creative writing but did find my way back to it later. What genre do you prefer to write in? What draws you to that genre?
I prefer to write drama or dramedies. More specifically, dramas that weave multiple storylines together. I'm drawn to this genre because it's a great way to experience drama without actually living it :) No, seriously, I love the way a great drama grips you emotionally, challenges the way you see life and invites you to wrestle with tough questions like, “What would I have done if it were me?”Tell us three things you're currently digging.
I am currently digging any kind of competitive cooking show like Beat Bobby Flay
or Fire Masters Grill
. I am also digging the Jack Ryan series and I'm about to dive into The World According to Fannie Davis
.What interested you about the Roadmap Diversity Initiative?
I think it's important that Black and other voices of color have equal opportunity to showcase our stories and creative ingenuity, and that is what Roadmap's Diversity Initiative is all about. I also appreciate that Roadmap's been doing this for several years, which speaks volumes about their commitment.Where can we find you?
